What Is a Flexible Vibratory Feeder?

A flexible vibratory feeder is an advanced parts feeding system that combines a vibrating platform with machine vision and robotic picking to handle multiple part types without mechanical tooling changes. Unlike standard bowl feeders that use fixed tooling to orient one specific part, flexible feeders use cameras and AI to identify parts in any orientation and guide a robot to pick them correctly.

This technology is transforming manufacturing lines that require multi-product flexibility, small batch production, or handling of parts that are difficult to orient with traditional mechanical methods. Huben Automation offers a complete range of flexible feeding systems, from compact 200mm platforms to large 500mm systems, all at factory-direct prices.

How Flexible Feeders Work

The flexible feeding process involves four key steps that repeat continuously:

  1. Vibration & Separation β€” The platform vibrates at controlled frequencies to spread parts into a single layer, separating overlapping pieces and moving them into the camera field of view.
  2. Vision Recognition β€” A high-resolution industrial camera captures an image of the platform. AI-powered image processing identifies each part, classifies its type, and determines its precise position and orientation.
  3. Robot Communication β€” The vision system sends pick coordinates (X, Y, rotation angle) to the robot controller. Multiple pick candidates are prioritized based on accessibility and orientation quality.
  4. Robotic Picking β€” The robot picks the oriented part using a vacuum, magnetic, or gripper end-effector and places it at the target location for the next production step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose a flexible feeder when you need to handle multiple part types on the same line, when your production involves frequent changeovers, when parts are too delicate for mechanical tooling, or when part geometries are too complex for traditional orientation mechanisms. For single-part, high-volume production, a standard bowl feeder is more cost-effective.
Our flexible feeders integrate with all major collaborative and industrial robot brands including Universal Robots (UR), FANUC, Omron, Doosan, KUKA, and ABB. We provide standard communication protocols (Modbus TCP, Profinet, EtherCAT) and can customize integration for any robot platform.
A high-resolution industrial camera mounted above the vibrating platform captures images of parts in random positions. AI-powered image processing identifies each part, determines its orientation, and calculates the optimal pick position. This data is sent to the robot, which picks and places the part precisely. The entire cycle takes 1-3 seconds per part.
Yes. Our flexible feeders can handle parts as small as 2mm. For very small parts (under 5mm), we use specialized high-resolution cameras and vibration parameters optimized for micro-components. However, for extremely high-speed feeding of tiny, simple parts (like screws under M3), a standard bowl feeder may still be more efficient.
